 About Silver Swans

Silver Swans is the name for the programme of classes for pensioners being launched by Inverclyde’s only Royal Academy School of Classical Ballet, Elite Academy of Dance. The move follows a successful pilot by the Royal Academy of Dance in Glasgow. Elite Academy and Alba Ballet owner, Julie Gunn said: “Silver Swans Greenock is simple classical ballet for the over 60s. The Silver Swans programme will help with fitness, flexibility and posture and give students the opportunity to learn classical ballet. The classes will promote well being and balance while having fun in a group environment.”

Silver Swans Ballet Greenock is open to anyone who is interested in trying ballet – whether they danced in their younger days or not. The classes will go back to basics and build on the classic ballet positions over the months.

Participants in the Glasgow trial scheme reported that ballet helped them on many levels –mental and physical. One said: “I love it. It makes me feel young again on the inside.”

It’s hard to say where the huge interest in ballet among older people has come from. Some may be down to the popularity of TV shows such as Strictly Come Dance. Whatever causes it, the word is out, and dance for pensioners is a booming.

Many of the dancers – who are all in their sixties, seventies and eighties – have struck up strong friendships and find the social aspect of the ballet classes has given them a huge boost too. The popular Silver Swans sessions in Glasgow now have a waiting list and Julie will now be running two classes in Greenock due to popular demand. Dancer Julie Gunn spent many years training and learning her craft at Ballet West. Keen to pass on her passion for ballet to future generations she trained as a teacher and, in 2009, opened The Elite Academy of Dance.

Julie is a Royal Academy of Dance registered teacher which means she holds a recognised qualification and is a member of an organisation that is at the forefront of dance education. The influential Royal Academy of Dance promotes knowledge, understanding and practice of dance internationally and is globally recognised as a leader in continuing professional development in dance. Julie will now be running two classes as demand for places has been high. They will run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 11am at her studio at 15a Watt Street Greenock. Contact Julie on 07753 246 035 for details.
